    This is a complete lesson based around a Norman Rockwell painting. Using the painting, students explore goods and services. (The lesson includes a handout and an online activity.)

  • This site shows the many roles a farmer has in the form of "hats" he wears. It highlights the importance a farmer plays in the community and beyond.
  • Students can create their own "Many Hats of a Worker."

• Explore occupations in the community at The Community Club (http://teacher.scholastic.com/commclub/)
  
  • Assign each student to read about a community worker (the site provides audio as well).
  • Complete this handout after visiting the site.

• Explore the neighborhood and students' roles in the neighborhood at Kids Next Door (http://www.hud.gov/kids/)

• Explore occupations with these online activities from EconEdLink:
  • What Do You Want To Be?

    Students read about occupations at this site. Students then select one occupation and dress a paper doll in appropriate clothing. Paper dolls can be printed out and colored.
  • What Do Other People Want To Be?

    This site generates a random survey of what people want to do when they grow up. Students then create a graph using the results.
    • Have students conduct their own survey. Graph the results of the survey in The Graph Club.

• Create a class slide show highlighting goods and services provided in the community.
  • Sample Slide Show, "Our Community Business." This slide show was created in KidPix by a 2nd grade class.

    Students visit the community club and read about community workers. Eight community workers, including a veterinarian, a librarian, a pizza maker, a utility worker, a mayor, a police officer, a firefighter, and a pediatrician are spotlighted on this site. Students can complete this exercise at this site.

    Students can "meet cool people," "see neat things," and "visit awesome places" at this page designed to help children learn about being good citizens.
