Tools to Tame Your Social Studies Curriculum



Kindergarten Ideas
Objective: 6000-0102 Observe and describe seasonal changes. Identify different activities experienced during different seasons.
Postcard Idea: As a class, generate ideas of what activities you do in different season. As a class, write some of your favorites and send them to another kindergarten class in your school, district, state, etc.
Trading Card Idea: Make a trading card for each season. Include the characteristics that make each season different, activities that you would do, clothing you would wear etc. Use the cards to play go fish etc.

Objective: 6000-0201 Describe jobs of people at home and at school.

Postcard Idea: Send a postcard to various school and community personnel describing what students think they do. Ask questions to generate a response.
Trading Card Idea: Make a trading card with a picture of a professional on one side and a bulleted list of what they do on the other.

Objective: 6000-0501 Memorize home address and phone number.

Postcard Idea: Have students make postcards to send to people in the class. One requirement is that they put their return address on.
Trading Card Idea: Put the students picture on one side and have them put their phone number and address on the other. Put them in the drama center with a phone or a post office center.

First Grade Ideas
Objective: 6010-0301& 0302 Identify People in the school. Connect people with their roles.

Postcard Idea: Send a postcard to various school personnel. Have the student write what they think their job is, but have the school personnel reply with what they really do.
Trading Card Idea: Make a trading card with a picture of a professional on one side and a bulleted list of what they do on the other. Include what kind of education they need for their job.

Objective: 6010-0601 & 0602 Describe neighborhood terrain and features. Demonstrate beginning map skills.

Postcard Idea: Take a walk around the school yard. Have students make maps of the school and safe places to be for upcoming first graders.
Trading Card Idea: Have each student or a group of students explore a specific feature in the neighborhood. Make a trading card with a picture of the feature on one sides and a bulleted list of characteristics on the other.

Objective: 6010-0702 Compare Utah seasons, plants and animals with those of Australia.

Postcard Idea: Make a postcard with what season it is in Utah on one side and what season it is in Australia on the other. Send it to family and friends with the caption Did you know...

Second Grade Ideas

Objective: 6020-0602 Use map and globe skills to identify major physical characteristics of the local community.

Postcard Idea: Make a map of your community using kidpix. Send the map and directions for getting to your school to a visiting speaker, the substitute office, families, etc.

Objective: 6020-0301 Make a contribution to the community.

Postcard idea: Organize a community clean-up activity, literacy event, math event, Sub-for-Santa, Box tops collection, etc. and have students design an invitation to the event stating time, place, day and how the event will help the community.

Objective: 6020-051 Compare everyday life in the local community with that of the Ouelessebougou community.

Postcard Idea: Make a Postcard with a picture of the one item students use every day and couldn’t live with out. Describe how this item is used in their life and make comparisons to the Ouelessebougou community or send the postcards to a pen pal class in Ouelessebougou with a question asking them what their item would be.
Trading Card Idea: Make trading cards with different features of your local community on one side and a comparison to an Ouelessebougou feature on the other. Include a bulleted list of similarities and differences.

  • Objective 1: Predict how human activity will influence environments and communities.
    • Describe various environments; e.g., desert, plains, tropical, tundra, steppe, mountain, frozen, forest.

    • Describe changes in environments caused by human inventions; e.g., plow, steel, railroads, telephone, telegraph, automobile.

  • Identify factors that contributed to the development of the land; e.g., location, natural resources, climate.
  • Identify factors that have historically contributed to the growth of Utah; e.g., agriculture, industry, resources.

Post Card Ideas: Develop a postcard that highlights the part of the state that you live in. Talk about important factors such as climate, location, and industry. Send this postcard to a fourth-grade student living in a different part of the state. Make sure that the postcard has a correct address on it.

Trading Card Ideas: Create a trading card that shares important information about communities in Utah. Choose one community for each county to help compare and contrast different characteristics across the state.

Post Card Ideas: Choose one major American leader and learn more about their role in American history. Write a postcard as if you are that leader to another prominent American who lived during that time. List your views on important events and political issues.

Trading Card Ideas: Create a “top ten” list of major American leaders who have influenced our country. Make a trading card for each of them sharing their role in the history of our country. Compare your trading cards with those created by other students.

      • Compare life in Athens and Sparta; e.g., government, recreation, religion, arts, theatre, science.

Trading Card Ideas: Determine important components of ancient civilization such as language, government, dress, culture, and religion. Research ancient Greece and ancient Rome to learn about each of these categories. Create a set of trading cards for each civilization. Use this information to identify similarities and differences between these ancient civilizations.
