This site provides age-appropriate information regarding Utah. Check out the county section for information about various communities throughout Utah.
SurWeb Media Shows
The following media shows highlight communities in Utah and their history. Many present-day slilde shows can be found at the Surweb site.
Trading Card Ideas: Create a trading card that shares important information about communities in Utah. Choose one community for each county to help compare and contrast different characteristics across the state.
Post Card Ideas: Develop a postcard that highlights the part of the state that you live in. Talk about important factors such as climate, location, and industry. Send this postcard to a fourth-grade student living in a different part of the state. Make sure that the postcard has a correct address on it.

 Standard 3 Students summarize how a constitutional government and a free market economy developed in Utah.

This site takes students on a "tour" of economy. Includes some classroom activities, as well as some online activities.

Governors of Utah. This is a collection of pictures of the governors of Utah. It includes brief biographical information as well.

This site focuses on people who have made a difference with environmental issues.

Learning Adventures in Citizenship. Students can explore citizenship at this site. Choose Things to do in your town to gather ideas for improving your own neighborhood.

Uniting in the Spirit of America. Points of Light provides this site to give students ideas and procedures for volunteering in their community.

Standard 5 Students compare governments and economies of Utah and Japan.

Destinations Japan

Learn about life in Japan by gathering background information, taking a guided tour, and reading about the people of Japan.

Explore Japan

Use Inspiration Templates or an Investigation poster for research.

Standard 6 Students use geographical tools to analyze political and physical features of Utah and the Western United States.

America's Story "Explore the States."

Students can select a state to explore. The site includes easy-to-read stories that range in subject.

Postcard idea: Have students work in groups to create a collection of postcards from states in the western region of the United States. Each postcard should one difference and one similarity between the state and Utah.

Standard 7 Students use geographical tools to analyze political and physical features of Utah, the United States, China, and Asia.

SurWeb is a great starting point for teachers of Utah History. Surweb provides four options for students and educators:
  • Image Collection. A large collection of images ranging in many topics. The majority of the collections involve Utah. These images can be put together as slide shows or can be saved and used in other projects.
  • Media Shows. This is a collection of slideshows created by students and educators using the images available on SurWeb. Media shows can be created and published by any Utah educator or student.
  • Testing. Educators can create their own online quizzes
