T4 Tips Podcast #13 - Calendar Sharing with Sunbird
Sunbird is a free, open source software application that is similar to Microsoft's Outlook (at least the calendaring section of Outlook) and Apple's iCal.
Create an account if you have not already done so.
Visit the account information page at icalx.com.
Take note of the special publishing addresses (URLs) at the bottom of the page (see screenshot below).
Return to Sunbird.
Right-click (Control-Click on a Mac) on the title of your calendar in the listing of calendars on the left.
Select "Publish Calendar..."
Type in the address given to you by icalx.com. Don't forget to complete the address with the title of your calendar. It's best if you don't include spaces or special characters in your calendar name.
For example: http://icalx.com/public/jordanschooldistrict/calendar.ics
Enter in your icalx username and password.
To Subscribe to a Published Calendar
iCal:
From the Calendar menu, select "Subscribe".
Enter in the calendar address (from above).
Enter in your icalx username and password (if the calendar is private).
Sunbird:
From the File menu, select "Subscribe to remote calendar".
Enter in the calendar address (from above).
Enter in your icalx username and password (if the calendar is private).
To View a Listing of Subscribable Calendars
All of the sites below offer many .ics calendars to which you may subscribe (subscriptions are nearly always free).
Calendars using the .ics extension can be viewed in Mozilla Sunbird, Apple iCal, Microsoft Outlook 2007, and many other calendar software applications.
