Way Beyond “Google”search

Google has become almost a synonym with searching, but there are other search engines, and some are specifically for children or educational purposes.  Remember more is not always better, Google often ranks the priority of sites on revenue generated or the number of “hits”.  Millions of sites found on a subject is often just plain overwhelming. 

Below are some that are worth looking at:

Academic Index or http://www.academicindex.net/

This is a search that includes results from databases that only look at research-quality reference and information sources selected by professional librarians and educators. Since you select the academic area, results are limited to that area.

 

AltaVista or http://www.altavista.com/


 A high profile search engine. Advanced Search features: search for files with extensions, by date, and more. Really great is the Babel Fish Translation site translates web page into different languages.

 

Ask or http://www.ask.com/


Formerly Ask Jeeves, who has apparently been let go.  The is a great search engine, offering previews of some sites, links for expanding and narrowing your search, and other
helpful features.  Easy for younger kids or special needs, you can type in an entire question to be answered.

The search from Microsoft.com and was previously known as Windows Live Search. It organizes results into topic categories and offers related search suggestions; includes multimedia and other deep Web searches. Main focus of searches is to assist in making a purchase decision, planning a trip, researching a health condition, and finding a local business.

Automatically organizes small collections of search results into thematic categories. A good site for lower grades.

Search results are ranked on relevance by searching the Web for pages for your search terms and then analyzing the rest of the text on those pages. Results show different meanings of the keywords in different contexts.  Knows the difference between “Jaguar” the cat and “jaguar” the car.

Gives users access to searching the Web, images, videos, people, news, shopping and Classifieds sites. These site lets you see the image of web pages found.

Quintura is a visual search engine. Good for visual learners or  for narrowing a topic.  Good results with very little commercial sites. 

 

Soople or http://www.soople.com/  

Soople is a gateway to Google, but helps refine the searching process.

This is a fun search that lookes for the "top stories, opinions, photos and videos emerging across news, entertainment, technology, lifestyle, sports, politics and business" on blogs.  Enter  your topic into the search box, or you can use some of the specific categories: Photos, Videos, Blogger Central, and more.
