Students will be able to recognize idioms and to interpret literal and figurative meanings in literature.

 

Think About Your Students

Pre-assessment on readiness/interest (informal- raise of hand). After introducing idioms in literature; ie, The King Who Rained and/or The Chocolate Moose for Dinner

 

Initiating Activities

After reading a book, identify and discuss what idioms are and site some examples in the book. Have the class brainstorm a list of additional idioms.

 

group 1

Draw a picture of the literal and figurative meanings of at least 2 idioms. (Students will choose from the list of books provided by the teacher.)

group 2

Using an Ameila Bedelia book, the
students will identify five idioms and choose two to illustrate, adding their figurative component.

group 3

After reading Play Ball Amelia Bedelia, write your own creative story using at least five idioms. Illustrate your story.
