Schools should begin this process with a thorough review of their Comprehensive School Improvement Plan, identifying the role of technology within the plan. A goal to conduct an annual assessment of instructional technology integration is part of Jordan School District's Instructional Technology Strategic Plan (Goal 7). A similar goal should be part of each school's plan.

The District recommends that schools consider including this assessment as part of their Comprehensive School Improvement Plan.

  • The District will provide the initial cost of the assessment. Schools should consider appropriate follow-up inservices for debriefing meetings and planning for personal improvement.
  • The LoTi Instructional Technology Use Assessment project will be built-in to the inservice included with elementary computer labs. All schools receiving elementary computer labs will be asked to participate in the project and will receive inservice hours for staff members.

Schools will be asked to stay within a recommended timeline...

The questionnaire is available for teachers during specifc windows determined by the district. Contact your curriculum technology specialist for information on scheduled windows. An initial meeting should be held with staff members to validate the need for an assessment and introduce them to this project. The district technology specialists are willing to be part of this procedure. Schools will be more successful if all teachers can take the online questionnaire at the same time. (Schools participating in the pilot provided doughnuts for their teachers as they took the surveys.) Each participant needs to have access to an internet-capable machine. More detailed instructions, including passwords and procedures, will be sent to participating schools before the assessment becomes available.

After the results are tabulated and school and teacher profiles are generated, the staff could participate in a series of activities. An initial debriefing session could be held to review the results of the survey and target specific interventions. A staff development program can then be created to determine additional activities.

Assessing technology use in classrooms is a key to efficient staff development and planning. The LoTi assessment will help schools identify the big rocks in the road ahead. Schools can then be better prepared to address where to go with the results...
